FACULTY OF BUDDHISM
The Faculty of Buddhism, divided into the Department of Zen Buddhist Studies and the Department of Buddhist Studies, has a long tradition. The Department of Zen Buddhist Studies offers courses for the systematic and comprehensive study of Zen Buddhism. The study is based upon Buddhist thought and the method of Zen Meditation (Zazen). The Department also conducts intensive research on the history and doctrine of Zen Buddhism.
Zen Buddhism is a doctrine of practice which makes Zen Meditation the center of daily life. Its profound spiritual wealth is now an object of international interest; scholars and students come from all over the world come to attend these lectures.
Zen Meditation was first introduced from China to Japan by Master Dogen. Zen Buddhism has exerted an especially strong influence upon the traditional culture of Japan. The tea ceremony, which has its origin in the Middle Ages, Noh drama, and the old Japanese art forms of black-and-white painting testify to the influence of Zen Buddhism. The design of the Japanese Garden, whose prototype is the rock garden, the traditional tea rooms, the architecture of the Buddhist temples, and the drawing room of Karayo-Shoin, exhibit the strong influence of Zen Buddhism. Research and education in Zen Buddhism therefore concern not only its doctrinal content and history, but also its various influences on Japanese culture and on the psychology of the people.
The Department of Buddhist Studies provides many courses for students to inform themselves about Buddhism from a wide variety of perspectives. Buddhism is a world religion that has developed in different regions of Asia and affected their societies and cultures. The study of Buddhism requires an understanding of the languages in which the scriptures were written. Accordingly the Faculty of Buddhism offers a wide range of in-depth studies of the languages in which the doctrines are conveyed, an intensive study of the original doctrine and literature, and a detailed consideration of its religious, philosophical, cultural, and artistic history. New research is always under way, leading to new developments in the system of education. Buddhist research is as much an object of international interest as is Zen Buddhism.
