FACULTY OF LAW
The Department of Law, a subdivision of the Faculty of Law, was established in 1964.
In 1968 The Graduate School of Law was founded in 1968, offering master′s degree programs (two-year programs) and doctoral programs (three-year programs) for Public Law and Private Law.
In 1971 the Department of Law offered an evening degree program.
In 1972 the Department of Political Science was founded.
The Faculty of Law based on "The Spirit of Foundation" , searches for truth and higher value. It is a kind of research community for students who try to refine their personalities. The guiding idea of the Faculty of Law attaches importance to cultivation of character. We hope that students will not only extend their knowledge as persons of sound judgment but also gain a specialist knowledge of law and political science.
The Faculty of Law takes the standpoint that there are some unchangeable elements in education despite historical movement, and that at the same time there are other elements in education which change and grow as history changes. In ancient Greece education was divided into three trainings: intellectual training, moral training, and physical training, and these three trainings had equal value. The Faculty of Law thinks that the value of these trainings is eternal even though history changes.
In 1996 the Faculty of Law brought a new curriculum into operation to keep up with the advancing charge of modern society. While the number of credits for graduation was reduced from 142 credits to 128 credits in order to respect students′ independence, religion, which is a kind of moral training, has remained as a required subject. On the other hand the Faculty of Law identified and chose more general education subjects and major subjects which were truly relevant, to live up to the various values and requirements of students, updating the contents of these subjects and expanding the possibilities of their choices substantially. Students are able to apply for graduate school even if they are juniors. The seminars have been made richer in content, and Seminars for Sophomores have been established. A variety of seminars were opened for juniors and seniors to meet their requirements.
All of the full-time faculty professors, associate professors and instructors expound their scholarship in the publication of articles that enable scholars of the extended academic world to benefit from their research. Since the Faculty of Law was founded, it has been publishing three annual journals: The Journal of the Faculty of Law of Komazawa University, The Komazawa University Law Review, and Komazawa University Political Science Review. The volumes totaled 133 in 1997. The Faculty publishes two additional journals of graduate students specifically from its graduate division: The Public Law Review of the Graduate School of Komazawa University, and The Private Law Review of Komazawa University. As of 1997 the total volumes came to 43. The two auxiliary institutes are attached to the Law Faculty: The Institute for Legal Research of Komazawa University, and The Institute for Mass Communication of Komazawa University. The functioning of these institutes depends on the active participation of some of the Law Faculty professors.
