 授業概要 The goal of this course is the acquisition of communicative English proficiency in an academic context. The students will be exposed to a variety of topics relevant to their academic lives. Not only will students improve their command of Academic English, but they will also gain knowledge about specific content areas. Various study skills, which are transferable to other areas of their education, will also be introduced. All lessons will be taught by a native English-speaking instructor, and an English-only classroom environment will be maintained. In addition, students will be required to complete online assignments during class. These assignments will focus on grammar and will enhance students' ability to use English in a meaningful context. While completing the online assignments, the students will also have an opportunity to review language and ask questions.
 到達目標(ねらい) The students will apply the oral communication skills learned in the previous term to an academic context and will continue to acquire new vocabulary and expressions through listening and speaking activities. In each lesson, the students will be introduced to a new academic topic through a recorded lecture or a recitation by the instructor. The students will learn effective listening strategies and acquire the skills and confidence necessary for understanding English-only lectures in their future academic careers. Some vocabulary-building activities will be included to enhance students’ understanding of the academic content. The students will participate in speaking activities based on the lesson topic, such as discussions, debates, short speeches, and group presentations. Activities to build study skills will be integrated into the lessons, and the students will acquire academic skills such as note-taking, asking questions, and critical thinking. Presentation skills will be developed throughout the term, and all students will make two presentations. The first will be an individual informative presentation, and the second will be a group persuasive presentation.

 履修上の留意点等 1) Students must bring their laptop/tablet computers and earphones to every lesson.
2) Students will not be penalized for up to three absences in the semester, but they will be penalized 5% for each absence over three
- Being late for class (arriving after the bell) = half an absence
- Arriving more than 30 minutes late for a class = 1 absence
- Eight or more absences = automatic failure
3) The instructor is available to answer questions before and after each lesson or at English Lounge.

 アクティブラーニング型の授業科目 During the course, the students will:
・participate in speaking activities based on the lesson topic, such as discussions in pairs or small groups, debates, short speeches and group presentations.
・develop presentation skills throughout the term and make two presentations. Each presentation requires research inside and outside of class as an individual project and a group project.
・be given E-learning assignments.
・be strongly encouraged to regularly attend English Lounge.
