授業概要 This course is a continuation from Written Communication 1. In Written Communication 2, the emphasis will switch to a more academic-style of writing, with students producing one 500-word essay. Students will
independently research the topic of the essay. In this way, reading skills and writing skills are naturally linked together as they are in the real world. Both the reading and writing elements of the course will be assessed. You will read graded material extensively (‘extensive reading’) to help develop your general reading ability in English. You will also get exposure to a variety of different written genres: formal academic-style writing in the textbook; and simplified fiction and non-fiction in the extensive reading component of the
course.
到達目標(ねらい) Students will learn how to research and write a 5-paragraph essay in English, and will continue to develop greater confidence in reading English. Exposure to different genres of writing will make you read in ways that are appropriate to the requirements of the situation. The graded readers will allow you to develop your ability to read quickly and smoothly; the exercises you do from the textbook will make you process texts more carefully so that you look for implied meanings and interpret the writer’s message more critically. In addition to writing a formal essay, you will also develop confidence and fluency in writing through the weekly journal/blog.
This course is the second of three compulsory integrated reading/writing courses that you will take in GMS. At this stage, you are expected to be making the transition from reading and writing at an “intermediate” (CEFR
B1) level to reading and writing at an “upper intermediate” (CEFR B2) level.

A good up-to-date portable electronic dictionary is highly recommended. Many now have an English-Japanese and a learner’s English-English dictionary incorporated which students are strongly encouraged to use. You are also strongly encouraged to make full use of free online resources such as the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD) which will help you
understand how vocabulary is used in modern, everyday English.
