| 授業概要 | This course is designed to help you build on the speaking and listening skills you may have developed in previous courses. The main component of the course is evaluated group discussion, sometimes on set topics and sometimes on topics students decide. In addition, you will make group presentations and will listen to material connected to the discussion topics. Your preparation for the discussions will be evaluated and you will evaluate other students` group discussions. Although the course focuses on group discussion and presentation skills, you will also develop your reading skills as you research topics and will develop your writing skills as you make preparatory notes for your discussions and presentations. |

| 到達目標(ねらい) | In this course your ability to participate in a group discussion will develop. Listening carefully to others, making contributions which allow the discussion to move forward, encouraging others to participate, checking on progress towards consensus, challenging the opinions of others, keeping the discussion on track, and seeking conciliation are all essential skills that you will have the opportunity to practise and deploy throughout this course. Through making presentations, your ability to speak formally in front of a larger group of people will also develop. In particular your ability to organize your presentations, to signpost your talk to help listeners to follow, to make eye contact, and to speak from notes will improve. At this stage, you are expected to be making the transition from being able to speak and comprehend at an “intermediate” (CEFR B1) level to being able to speak and comprehend at an “upper intermediate” (CEFR B2) level. |

| 履修上の留意点等 | Attendance is essential and punctuality is expected. Students will not be penalized for up to three absences in the semester, but they will be penalized 5% for each absence over three. Being late for class (arriving after the bell) = “half an absence” Arriving more than 30 minutes late for a class = 1 absenceEight or more absences = automatic failure. |
