FACULTY OF LETTERS
In the spirit of the basic principle of the university, “to discipline oneself and assist others,” the Faculty of Letters strives to develop the individuality and creativity of its students. The faculty hopes to impart specialized knowledge to make its students act more independently, see the world broad-mindedly, and think more flexibly. The Faculty comprises six departments: Japanese Literature, English and American Literature, Geography, History, Sociology, and Psychology. All courses in these departments are conducted in the daytime program.
1. The Department of Japanese Literature helps students deepen their understanding of the mentality and sensibility of the Japanese people. It develops a mature understanding of the specific character of Japanese culture by conducting creative interpretations of the classic literary works from ancient times, such as Manyoshu and Genji Monogatari, up until modern Japanese classics of the twentieth century. The Department also conducts penetrating studies of the lives and works of prominent Japanese authors such as Matsuo Basho and Natsume Soseki. The university library has vast holdings of the classic texts, secondary literary works, and critical literature.
2. The renowned faculty of the Department of English and American Literature inculcates a wide international perspective in its students. The teaching staff guides its students in the reading of major literary works in the original language. It conducts courses in classic English and American authors such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Emerson, Faulkner and a myriad of others. Study of classic literature, in addition to supplemental training in English, develops in its students a superior ability to communicate in English.
3. The Department of Geography offers two main programs of study: cultural and environmental geography. The Department is rightly famous throughout Japan for its excellence, and an exceptionally large number of students come from all over Japan to enroll in this outstanding department. To satisfy such popular demand, the Department accordingly has a full staff of senior professors. The Department is intent on thoroughly training the students in the research methods of physical and human geography; to this purpose every year the professorial faculty takes students on elaborate field excursions. Students receive geography lectures in a wide array of special areas of study, but they also become adept at applied geography by learning all the techniques connected with mapping, collection of geographical data, and analysis of such data.
4. The Department of History provides four main programs of study: Japanese history, Oriental history, Occidental history, and Archaeology. The program of Japanese history provides fascinating lectures, seminars, and readings in historical documents on the ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary periods. It also provides instruction on the research and preservation of historical manuscripts. The program of Oriental history provides a wide range of lectures on Asia, including China and Inner Asia. The program of Occidental history provides many lectures spanning the ancient period through the present, covering the entire European region. Rare among universities in Japan, the archaeology program provides lectures not only on Japanese, but also on Chinese and Korean archaeology.
5. The Department of Sociology offers two main programs of study: sociology and social welfare. The study program in sociology conducts a systematic treatment of topics in data processing and social research. This practice not only elucidates the theory and methodology of sociology for specific problems of contemporary society, but also develops the ability to identify social problems and effectively organize relevant information. The study program in social welfare is a very practical program that seeks to endow its students with a broad power of practical judgment by which they may function well as social workers. The students are accordingly educated to develop a capability to analyze the complicated structures and changes in human society, to understand other people, and to devise solutions for a variety of actual social problems.
6. The Department of Psychology seeks to encourage the student to develop an ability for solving social and psychological problems and for making scientific judgments. The course offerings are composed of a basic program, for freshmen and sophomores to acquire a knowledge of natural science, including basic psychology, and of a practical program, for juniors and seniors to deal with social demands. These curricula lead to the acquisition of licenses in psychology, such as those of the clinical psychologist, the JPA qualified psychologist, and the applied psychologist.
