✳<Explanatory note>
“Gannoubichoku(眼横鼻直)” means that “The eyes lie horizontal, the nose stands vertical”, (or “The eyes are horizontal and the nose is vertical.”)
Dogen-zenji (道元禅師, Eihei Dogen, 1200-1253), the founder of the Soto Zen sect in Japan, went on a journey overseas to Song China for five years, on his return to Japan he imparted the wise saying of “Gannoubichoku” ( “Eiheigen Zenji Gōroku” (1) ). Dogen studied under Nyojo Zenji (1162-1228), and achieved enlightenment by realizing first-hand the meaning of “reality” – “Gannoubichoku”, or – “The eyes are horizontal and the nose is vertical”, and in that regard this saying means “reality”. After this realization Dogen acknowledged that nothing at all was perplexing anymore. Dogen directly received the teachings of his teacher Nyojo, and achieved realization.
The university professors have also selected these recommended books for the purpose of cultivating insight and the intellectual ability to penetrate deeply into ideas.
