Department of Zen Buddhist Studies
The Department offers courses in various fields of Buddhism, ranging from China to Japan, from the earliest days of Zen Buddhism to the present, and from its teachings and philosophy to its arts. The Department also equips students with a general knowledge of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism from Master Dogen and Master Keizan to the present.
In your first and second years you will learn languages such as the classical Chinese necessary for researching literature on Buddhism and will acquire a broad fundamental knowledge of Buddhism.
In your third and fourth years you will choose a field of interest from the wide range of courses available and study this field in Seminar I and Seminar II. You will be able to take special subjects provided in the Department of Buddhist Studies according to your interests.
Department of Buddhist Studies
The Department provides courses on the science of religion and Buddhism developed in various regions such as India, Tibet, China, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. The Department also provides a general introduction to the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism.
